Bear’s Den

Welcome to Bear’s Den! We’re so glad you’re heading our way soon!

We are Jerome and Kellie Daley, the property concierges for this exceptional retreat home owned by Max and Das Korala, who make their home in Tampa. So whether you are here for the hiking, the local wineries, the many sights to see, or to simply get away for the weekend, you are most welcome.

This Home Book should lay out all you need to know to fully operate and enjoy this home as well as guide you to some of the many great things to do here in the High Country. If you have any needs while you are here, we are only a message away. We live close by, and we want your stay to exceed your expectations in every way. Enjoy!

GPS

The house address for Bear’s Den is 314 Bear’s Den, Boone NC 28607, and GPS should put you right there. The neighborhood roads are narrow, so please use caution, particularly if there is snow on the road.

Essentials

House Key

There is a keypad on the front door, and you will receive the code to the door as well as the gate code for the neighborhood the morning of your arrival. When you check out, please lock both the back and front doors.

wifi

Network: bearsden314 Password: politetuba109

Cell Phone service

The mountains are notoriously bad for cellular service. If you have Verizon, you can probably make and receive calls—and it’s better outside. Other providers will probably not work… although using wifi-assist on your phone will help.

Temperature

The thermostat for the heating and A/C is on the wall in the great room as you enter. Set it to your comfort level, but turn it down when you leave.

TV

Each TV has a remote that controls both the TV and streaming. There is no cable or broadcast TV, but you can access thousands of TV shows and movies from the included Netflix account. Enough to keep you entertained for a long time. Easiest way to get there is simply press the “Netflix” button on the remote.

fireplace

To start the gas logs, open the mesh screen and look for a metal rod on the right side. Turn the handle a quarter turn to the left to start…and back to the right to turn it off. Do not leave the logs burning when the house is unattended, do not roast any food over the flame, and do not adjust any other fireplace controls; if the pilot goes out, please contact us!

makeup

Please use the provided make-up wipes instead of our white washcloths!

Cooking

The kitchen should be pretty self-explanatory. In addition to the built-in appliances, there is a toaster, a blender, and hopefully all the tools you will need to enjoy pulling together meals simple or elaborate! The dishwasher functions better if you brush most of the food off before loading.

  • Grill utensils are located in the kitchen drawer by the front door.

sleeper sofa

The sofa will have clean sheets on the mattress. Pillows, blankets, and towels will be in the storage chest in the loft.

garbage

ALL garbage must be bagged because it will be hand-carried away. Extra bags are located underneath the kitchen sink.

If you wind up with more than three bags of trash, please take them to the Watauga Waste Convenience Center at 5645 US 321, Blowing Rock NC 28605 (M, W, F, Sa from 8am-7pm) or the center at 336 Landfill Rd, Boone, NC 28607 (open every day except Sunday).

Safety & First Aid

There is a wide variety of wildlife in the area—from deer to turkey to foxes and coyotes to black bear. Never try to feed or touch wild animals. Just enjoy from a distance. And do not leave any trash or food items outside at night—this will invite visitors and a mess.

·       The first aid kit and fire extinguisher are located in the downstairs bathroom.

·       Hopefully all will be safe and sound, but in the event that you need medical help, the closest urgent care is Blowing Rock Plus Urgent Care located 7 miles away at 8439 Valley Blvd, Blowing Rock, NC 28605 (828-572-4706).

·       The closest hospital is Watauga Medical Center located 10 miles away at 336 Deerfield Rd, Boone, NC 28607 (828-262-4100).

Quiet Hours

We request quiet hours after 10pm, so please don’t play loud music after then. Just be respectful of the small number of neighbors that are nearby.

groceries

The closest grocery store is Ingles Markets, located at 2575 NC-105, Boone, NC 28607…about a 10 minute drive. Further into Boone are other choices including Earth Fare, Harris Teeter, and Publix.

Check-out Instructions

Closing up at Bear’s Den is a simple affair, so here are a few guidelines that will help make it ready for our cleaners…

  1. Kitchen – Please either wash your dishes or load the dishwasher and start it before you leave.

    • Please note that putting the detergent in the dishwasher—and not actually starting the dishwasher—causes hardship to our cleaning crew.

  2. Linens & Towels – Please leave the linens on your beds and place your used towels in the laundry basket (in the main house bathroom) and in the laundry room (in the cottage).

  3. Breakages & Damages – We understand that sometimes things break or get damaged; please let us know immediately if this happens so we can replace it for the next guest. If it’s small, just leave $10 or $20 to cover costs; if it’s bigger, we will work out an agreeable compensation for getting it fixed. Just please let us know asap.

  4. Courtesy – If you have moved any furniture, please place it back in its original position.

  5. Temperature – Please set the thermostat to 68 in the winter, or 78 in the summer.

  6. Fireplace & Grill – Make sure the gas logs are turned off (not the pilot, just the flame). If you used the grill, please clean it.

  7. Trash – Leave up to three bags of trash in the kitchen. If you have more than three bags, please take your bags to the Watauga Waste Convenience Center located at 5400 NC-194, Banner Elk, NC 28604 (8am – 7pm Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat) or at 336 Landfill Rd, Boone, NC 28607 (open every day except Sunday). All trash left at the house must actually in bags since it will be hand-carried out! Extra bags are located underneath the kitchen sink.
